The Disability Rights Consortium meeting will take place on Wednesday September 25th from 9:30-11:00 at Equip for Equality (20 N. Michigan, Suite 300). This month, we’re going to be discussing recent changes in the Election code and their implications for people with disabilities, including the new provision for on-line registration.
Our speakers will be:
Cheryl Jansen, Legislative Director at Equip for Equality, who will provide an overview of the recent changes to the Election Code passed in the 2013 legislative session.
Rebecca Reynolds, Executive Director of Chicago Votes, who will discuss her organization’s efforts surrounding community organizing, including their successful efforts at engagement around online voter registration. She will also discuss the need for community engagement in implementation of online voter registration in Illinois and provide tools for how to do so.
Rey Lopez Calderon, Executive Director of Common Cause Illinois, will discuss the experience of online voter registration in other states, focusing on California, and discuss the best practices and lessons learned. He will emphasize what Illinois needs to do to move forward with implementation and what steps the disability community can take to engage.
Attorneys who attend will receive Continuing Legal Education credit. A captioner will be at the meeting.
Also, please mark your calendar that Bill Bogdan from the IL Secretary of State’s office will be presenting at our October 23rd meeting on new laws regarding disability parking.
We hope to see you next Wednesday,
Barry C. Taylor
