Dear Disability Rights Consortium Members,

The next meeting of the Disability Rights Consortium will take place on Wednesday February 26th from 9:30-11:00 at Equip for Equality's Chicago office (20 N. Michigan, Suite 300) and via webcast at www.illinoislegaladvocate.org   This month's meeting will focus on the special education rights of court-involved youth with disabilities.  Our featured speakers will be Rachel Shapiro, a staff attorney at Equip for Equality, Aimee Rodriguez, a staff attorney and Equal Justice Works Fellow at Equip for Equality, and Rick Tekip, a Cook County Juvenile Court Probation Officer in the Advocacy Division. Rachel and Aimee will discuss the prevalence rates of exclusionary school discipline policies for  these youth, common educational problems these youth face,  and creative legal strategies to combat these educational problems.  Rick will discuss the role of educational advocates at juvenile court and his efforts to educate the school and court personnel about the youths’ educational rights.

Illinois attorneys attending this meeting will receive 1.5 hours of CLE credit.  A captioner will be present for the meeting.  If you need any other accommodation to participate in the meeting, please contact Barry Taylor at barryt@equipforequality.org by February 21st.

Finally, attached (see below) are the dates and topics for the 2014 Consortium meetings.  Note that our meeting in March will focus on veterans with disabilities.

Hope to see you on February 26th for our discussion of juvenile justice issues,

Barry C. Taylor
